I have been involved in architecture and building since I was twelve years old. As an eighth grader in Phoenix, Arizona, I became determined to make my life's work architecture. Throughout high school, I took courses which furthered my interest in architecture. Later, at Arizona State University, I received the Outstanding Graduate Student award in 1974.
I then spent the next year and a half studying the effects of solar energy and building design while attending graduate school at A.S.U. The result was the design of several outstanding solar residences over the next several years. Many of these can be found throughout Utah and Arizona and still function to this day.
My philosophy of architecture is that buildings should be integrated into their environment. There’s nothing I hate worse than driving through a poorly developed area. I believe that you can create a nicer development, commercial or residential by just putting a little thought into it. That’s my job and I love to see the outcome and the way it makes people’s lives better.
My main functions in The Architectural Coalition as Architect and Owner deal mostly with clientele relationships, project design, and overall project coordination. I am licensed as an architect in over 40 states and certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards and am the current president of the Utah Valley Exchange Club.
I love Architecture. This is the type of job where you really have to love what you’re doing. Architecture can be a stressful occupation, but I feel the rewards of seeing a finished project and seeing your vision come to life makes it all worth it.
Stephen always knew he wanted to be an architect.
In order to stay local, he completed a degree in
Civil Engineering at Brigham Young University after which
he enrolled in the architectural program offered at
Lawrence Technical University.
Stephen started as a drafter at Architectural Coalition over 8 years ago. He has been directly involved with most of the project completed during that time including steel buildings, residential, commercial and more.
Architecture? As soon as I discovered that they had an Architecture/Drafting program at my High School, I took every class that I could. By the time I was a senior, I had already taken every class available, so I obtained an internship with the Architectural Coalition in the fall of ‘96. I was officially hired on part time about 6 months later, and then hired on full time after I graduated from Provo High in ‘97.
Although I attended UVU, I attribute most of my knowledge of architecture and design to my actual working experience with the Architectural Coalition. In school, I learned the basics of how to draw lines and how to reproduce a drawing for an assignment. While I worked for Guil, I got the opportunity to draw structures that actually got built, and saw how everything goes together. I learned what works, and what doesn’t, how to save the client money and how to not over design a project. Maybe most importantly, |I learned how to take the lead on projects both big and small. I also gained experience on with the clients and contractors to ensure the success of each project. I found that experience in the field was a much better teacher than traditional schooling.
While working for the Architectural Coalition, I was designing & creating house plans for people under my own name. This eventually led to the creation of Legacy Builders, which was basically a collaboration of a designer and a contractor in one company. That was my first venture and one I gained many valuable experiences from. In 2004, I created Legacy Drafting and Design. In the beginning, my main focus was residential design, but I have grown to love architecture in all of its offerings. Whether it’s a small rendering for a home, a large custom home, a multi-family project or a hotel we're providing drafting services on for an architect, I love it all. I currently lead a team, 10 members strong that share my love for the industry. We do hundreds of projects each year. I also continue to collaborate on many projects with the Architectural Coalition and their team.
